Both 83 years old, Both crossed barriers with their talent and sexy appeal. Astrud Gilberto, the Brazilian singer, songwriter and entertainer whose off-hand, English-language cameo on “The Girl from Ipanema” made her a worldwide voice of bossa nova, has died at age 83. One of Brazil's biggest stars of the 1960s and 70s, she recorded 16 albums and worked with artists ranging from Quincy Jones to George Michael.
Her version of The Girl From Ipanema sold more than five million copies and helped to popularise bossa nova.
Sofia Gilberto, the artist's granddaughter, broke the news of her death on IG. Rest In Peace Goddess.

After a 24 year Hiatus …
Welcome Back Ben and Tracey, after a 24 year hiatus … you didn’t kiss a BEAT!! EBTG (Everything But The Girl) are STILL one of my ALL time favorites.
Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt put their duo Everything But the Girl on hold in 1999, at the height of their success, right after releasing Temperamental. They'd already turned down an offer to open for U2 on tour the year before; they wanted to start a family, so they turned their focus to that. While they raised three children, they each worked on solo projects; that way there was always one parent who could be focused on kids. Despite many offers to reform and remaining a couple (after 28 years together, they finally married in 2009 "at our accountant's suggestion"), they never felt a need to return to their group.
Then the pandemic hit and, like many people, Watt and Thorn found themselves with more time on their hands, and more time with each other. They began making music together again in Watt's home studio, but they kept the pressure off by calling the project TREN ("Tracey and Ben"). Soon, though, it became apparent what this was going to be. Everything But the Girl were back. “We found ourselves asking, ‘What does an Everything But the Girl album sound like? Should it sound like we did in 1985? Or in 1997?’,” Thorn told TIDAL magazine. "In the end, we wound up thinking, ‘We’re here and now. Let’s see what comes out.’”

Songwriting Great succumbs …
American great songwriter Cynthia Weil has passed away. The great ones are being called home. Cynthia Weil, who with her writing partner and husband, Barry Mann, formed one of the most potent songwriting teams of the 1960s and beyond, churning out enduring hits like the Drifters’ “On Broadway” and the Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feelin’,” signature tunes of the baby boomer era, died on Thursday at her home in Beverly Hills, Calif. She was 82.
Her death was confirmed on Friday by her daughter Jenn Mann, who did not specify a cause.
“We lost the beautiful, brilliant lyricist Cynthia Weil Mann,” the chart-topping singer and songwriter Carole King wrote in a statement posted on social media.
Recounting the friendship and rivalry that she and her former husband and songwriting partner, Gerry Goffin, shared with Ms. Weil and Mr. Mann (a friendship memorialized in Broadway’s “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” from 2014), Ms. King added, “The four of us were close, caring friends despite our fierce competition to write the next hit for an artist with a No. 1 song.”
Ms. Weil and Mr. Mann, who were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010, notched their first hit — “Bless You,” recorded by Tony Orlando — in 1961, two years after the music supposedly died with the Iowa air crash that claimed the lives of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson, known as the Big Bopper.
