Class and Showmanship

Venus Williams single handedly changed the game of Tennis.  She and sister Serena entered and arena where black people weren't really welcomed.  They didn't have crossover appeal of an Arthur Ashe or an Althea Gibson.  They were from Compton, the ghetto.  Commentators as well as their peers, seem to disregard and belittle them, however they let their Tennis game fight their battles.
Today they are the recipients of 24 single grand slam trophies and 13 doubles grand slam trophies.  At 33(Venus) and 32(Serena) the sisters are still at the Top of their game, with no sights on retiring. So GAME on Maria Sharapova and the rest, the William sisters are ready to serve!!

Maintain/TGIF

Happy Friday everybody, ... Let's Talk about It!

A pushover isn't as respected, as a strict force.  Discipline is a resourceful character builder, it becomes a warm security blanket filled with comforting things and people that you trust, admire and believe in.  Our dignity and standards should be the tone in which we govern our lives by, its a proven winning formula for all the unexpected wonderful things, that will come your way.   Let's continue to press forth by constantly challenging each other to push harder, to go deeper within, the depth is all there.  We are resilient souls with the uncanny ability to bounce back from life obstacles.   As we tend to reminisce we look back on yesterday, most with fondness and some regret is in there too.   The older that you get, the less negativity is tolerated.  Your want needs and desires become crystal clear.

Its hard to maintain focus if you have no direction.  Think of your life as a Menu, are you a delicious edible food or a side order?  Are we living to be a preservative; frozen stills in time.  Living with structure and flow is the ultimate goal in decorum and tenacity.  Replenishing the well is always a nice retooling of sorts, like being granted time here on earth, its like a sand capsule of sorts.  As life would have it, remarkably it all goes by so very fast, so the ones that leave a lasting impression, are always the standouts, and revisits.  Order is about foundation, that not everyone can perfect, its how we build and establish relationships, and how we juggle to find a balance to maintain whats important and organic.

Flashback Who's That Thursday

Donnie a singer, songwriter, arranger and Producer.  Growing in the church with his famous Soul Singiing cousin Marvin Gaye.  The soul singer faced some of those same demons that taunted his cousin, like singing secular music as oppose to singing for 'God' and battling sexuality conflicts that some Gospel luminaries try to confine you to.  Donnie released his debut on Giant Step and eventually on Motown records  The Colored Section was moderately successful. Some felt that Motown's promotional efforts on behalf of the album were halfhearted, although the song "Cloud 9" was heard in the hit film Brown Sugar, and another selection, "Our New National Anthem".  But critics gave rave reviews. "Donnie's 'The Colored Section' might be the best soul record since Stevie Wonder's masterpieces [of the 1970s]," praised the Boston Globe, while People felt that Donnie "someday … may just take a place alongside his cousin ... "Marvin Gaye".

Most Beautiful ....

Wow Hollywood can't get enough

Masterpieces

Singer, Songwriter, Actor, Producer Sting started out as a schoolteacher at St. Paul's First School in Cramlington for two years.  As a musician Sting has varied his musical style, incorporating distinct elements of rock, jazz,reggae, classical, new-age, and worldbeat into his music.  As a solo artist and member of The Police, Sting has received 16 Grammy Awards for his work, receiving his first Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 1980, a Golden Globe, an Emmy Award, and several Oscar nominations for Best Original Song. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Police in 2003. In 2000, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for recording. He was named to the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame in 2001. "Nothing Like The Sun" is my favorite of Sting's catalog, it was released in 1987, including the hit songs "We'll Be Together", "Fragile", "Englishman in New York", Sister Moon" and "Be Still My Beating Heart", dedicated to his mother, who had recently died. It eventually went Double Platinum.  With art its timeless, and though "Sun" is almost 30 years old, its still relevant today, pure brilliance!

Frank/TGIF

Happy Friday everybody, ... Let's Talk about It!!

There's no hiding place.  No turning back or running away from the choices that you've made, people wont understand, so dont spend your time worrying about what others say. Folks will criticize telling lies and spreading hate.  Be secure in knowing that a heart can break.  An enabler is just as guilty as the one who enables.  Cutting purse strings becomes a must at some point, just like erratic behaviors can not be overlooked, nor given a bye.  Culturally we as Americans are an Elite group of people, who are spoiled in luxuries that we often take for granted.  Its time to charter your own course, self discovery is yours to define, as the good book teaches you will get no more than you can bare.  The trenches are purposely difficult.

The pathway, your directions are a directive for you to press through.   We all walk in a similar direction trying to get to the other side.  Though none of us have made it through to the gates of heaven, our believability is very strong, and as the Bible illustrates, we are walking by faith and not by sight.  Do unto others, is rightfully rewarded.  Not everyone offers a friendly well intended exchange, and yes we will be graded for that too.  Your bad day has little to do with the person that you lashed out on, yet when the mood or tide has turned, and you're temporarily happy again; should all be forgiven?  Speak it, and ye shall receive it, be perfectly Frank in everything that you say and do, after all your word is your honor, its all that you truly have, live your truth authentically.

Here's Looking At You Kid

Lauren Bacall born Betty Joan Perske; September 16, 1924) is an American film and stage actress and model, known for her beautiful sultry looks and distinctive husky voice.  Bacall is one of the last standing of the Hollywood greats.

She first emerged as a leading lady in the Humphrey Bogart film To Have and Have Not (1944) and continued on in the film noir genre, with appearances in Bogart movies The Big Sleep (1946), Dark Passage (1947), and Key Largo (1948), as well as comedic roles in How to Marry a Millionaire (1953) with Marilyn Monroe and Designing Woman (1957) with Gregory Peck. Bacall has worked on Broadway in musicals, gaining Tony Awards for Applause in 1970 and Woman of the Year in 1981.  In 1990, she had a cameo in Rob Reiner's Misery (my personal fave).  Her performance in the movie The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996) earned her a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination.

Bacall was selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to receive an Honorary Academy Award. The award was presented at the inaugural Governors Awards on November 14, 2009.  At 89 years if age, this legendary beauty continues to work, whenever she gets the call, so cheers to you Ms. Bacall.  In the words of your late husband 'Here's Looking At You Kid'

Flashback Who's That Thursday

Canadian singer Deborah Cox, released her debut CD on September 12, 1995. It was certified gold in the United States, having sold over 500,000 copies.  The album consists of the hit single "Sentimental" (U.S. #27).  It was filled with pop, urban and dance selections.   Her followup CD  'One Wish' released in 1998. The album was certified platinum on the strength of the attention brought to it by the massive crossover hit single "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here" which held the #1 position for 14 weeks on the R&B charts and my personal favorite "It's Over Now".  The album peaked at #72 on the Billboard 200 and #14 on Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.  The album was certified Platinum.
Seemingly 'Cox's' career was fully ready to take flight, unfortunately her following three CD's never garnered the attention of her first two releases.  A couple label shifts later, didnt help things either.
The Canadian turned her attention to Broadway On February 17, 2004, she made her Broadway debut in the Elton John-Tim Rice musical Aida.  Cox currently lives in MiamiFlorida. She is married to her high school sweetheart and manager, Lascelles Stephens.  They have three children: son, Isaiah (born July 1, 2003), and two daughters, Sumayah (born June 29, 2006), and Kaila Michelle (born February 23, 2009).  These days she in the process of recording a dance CD and continues to your across the country on spot dates.

Ready or Die

Sept 13 - 1994 Biggie Smalls 'Ready To Die' was released and it single handedly changed the game of 'Hip Hop' culture. The baby model on the cover of the CD's name is Keithroy Yearwood, he is now in his early twenties. His pay for posing on the cover was 150.00 dollars, the Afro made him standout. Today he lives in the Bronx. The video for 'One More Chance' had a cast full of notable Hip Hop and R&B acts. Heavy D. was the announcer, he and Biggie are now doing their thing in the Heavens. Hard to believe 'Born To Die' was so autobiographical. Let's continue to celebrate Hip Hop culture and its Royalty ... Past and Present!

Adhere/TGIF

Happy Friday everyone, ... Let's Talk about It!!

Ever find yourself in the midst of another persons baggage and issues?  Finding the way to make an exit may be harder than you think.  In friendships/relationships you tend to engage in conversation in hopes of being supportive.  The situation takes on a negative connotation, when someone is being disingenuous in their truth.   I discuss ownership quite often, its a hard consistent walk, and when people fall short of their ideology, its easier to fault you, than to face themselves.  Its like their fear becomes so overwhelming, its easier to mask the reality, so many times, it's viewed that you're acting different, as a result of a vulnerable naked truth revealed, which apparently is harder to face, than realized.

Living in judgement of yourself is a jail sentence with no sight of parole.  Is it easier to stay caged; than to apply the application thats required?  Its gets very tiring having to carry the load, that others refuse to carry for themselves.  However it goes, their guilt tends to have the best game face.  The authenticity of sincerity, is transparent, ironically hidden agendas of others make for uncomfortable dialogue.   Stop looking for others to fix you, falling is a frailty, the triumph is in the recovery. When youre on overload, its okay to zone out and replenish, being everything to everybody can be very draining, its very important to know when to pull an about-face!

Flashback Who's That?

Flashback Who's That Thursday:

Though the good book teaches that we're not question why.  Sometimes I do have questions though.  As a teenager I got turned on to the European singer Lynden David Hall who was an award-winning English singersongwriterarranger, and record producer who emerged during the late 1990s as part of the Nu soul movement.  Hall's vocals was very reminiscent of Al Green, Terrence Trent Darby, Seal, Sting and D'Angelo.  He had all the makings of a bonafide superstar, he was the real deal, marketing departments dream.

In 1999, he was the first UK performer ever voted "Best Male Artist" by the readers of Britain's Blues & Soul magazine. I was super stoked when his debut albumMedicine 4 My Pain, was released his debut single "Do I Qualify" was my cut, but radio fell in love with his "Sexy Cinderella", which gave him instant appeal to soul fans in the UK and elsewhere, but it was not until his work got the remix treatment that he got his major breakthrough.  Everything was clicking for Hall.  The year 2000 saw the release of his followup CD to 'Medicine' which was entitled 'The Other Side' unfortunately that release didnt garner the attention of its predecessor and eventually his record label 'CoolTempo' dropped him.

Hall appeared in the film Love Actually in 2003, where he sang at the wedding of the characters played by Keira Knightley and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Two years later, he released his third studio album, In Between Jobs, on the independent record label Random Records, it was an critically acclaimed Opus, but did not resurrect the attention of his debut Album.

In October 2003, Hall was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma; he died on 14 February 2006, at the age of 31, from complications resulting from the stem cell transplant he received in January 2005. Hall was in remission at the time of his death. Hall is survived by his wife Nikki Hall.  Even though Hall only recorded three CD's he has left an lasting  impression on me and his mass following fanbase.  So on the days, when we're taught not to have questions ... Sometimes I still do, like wondering why ..... Lyndon David Hall, truly Gone Too Soon. Rest in Peace!!

U Tryin To Help IKE??

Legend - When Anna Mae Bullock finally had enough, she fought Ike with every inch of her soul. She broke free of those dysfunctional ties, and went on to become one of the most successful rock 'n' roll artists in the modern era. Tina Turner took Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Proud Mary' and put her stamp on it. Her Capitol Records debut 'Private Dancer' contained a remake of the Al Green classic 'Lets Stay Together' and the Grammy Award winning 'Record Of The Year' song 'Whats Love Got To Do With It'. Soon America was saying, Ike WHO?

Maxwell 1996

From 'Then' to 'Now' singer Maxwell, never disappoints!!!

Its All about the Afro!!

Its ALL about the AFRO - Singer, Songwriter Minnie Riperton had a 5 1/2 Octave range and could whistle with the Gods.  She's best known for her 1975 number 1 hit 'Lovin You' written by Stevie Wonder.  Her song 'Inside My Love' has been covered by 'Chante' Moore' and 'Trina Broussard'.  She along with Deniece Williams created pathways for the likes of Cheryl Lynn, Moore, Rachelle Ferrell and Mariah Carey for their dynamic ability of incorporating whistling into the upper register of their vocal abilities.  Actress Maya Rudolph of SNL fame is Rioerton's daughter, and her best friend was actress Pam Grier.  The two would often attend Minnie's son Marc's baseball games together.

Diagnosed with breast cancer in 1976, Riperton  released her last album entitled 'Minnie' in the summer of 1979, featuring the hit  'Memory Lane' some of the lyrics seemed very autobiographical 'Save Me Save Me Save Me, I Don't Want To Go, I thought It was Over'  as if she knew this would be her last offering to the world.  Minnie appeared on the Merv Griffith show on July 6th-1979, three days later on July 9th she passed away in her husband Richard Ruldolph's arms.

My Best-Friend

Happy Birthday Eve - thanks for being  my best-friend for twenty years.  You taught me so much about life, style, tolerance, temperament, confidence, grace, elegance and understanding.  We laughed a lot, talked a lot, and some days tears too, but it was all apart of our journey called friendship.  You were much ahead of your time.  Whenever I see or hear Prince, I think of you of course, you introduced us to his music, and was his biggest fan.  My world is not the same without you, but your memory is forever looked in my heart - always.  Oh btw knucklehead is STILL being himself:-)

Happy Birthday Eve - I love and miss you.

Legends of the Dancefloor ...

Process/TGIF

Happy Friday everyone, Let's Talk about It!

Why is it so easy to hurt someone; your personal pain, is not a pass to intentionally inflict hurt.  Every lesson is a process and a gain.  Revisitation allows you to reflect on the negative, put in your path.  A person without ambition is dead.  A person with ambition but no love is empty.   Persons with ambition and love, will reap blessings of the most high.   People see God every day, but not everyone acknowledge the grace.  Fraud is cheating oneself, by settling and looking for the easy way out.  Playing short is a sin against our creator.

There is a way to look at the past, its called 'ownership', everything is much easier after that.   There is a period in life when we swallow knowledge of ourselves, it will either be good, or sour you inside. When you’re young, the silliest notions seem the greatest achievements. To talk to someone who does not listen,  is enough to tense the devil. Everybody talks, but their actions are slow, when it comes to helping, nobody wants to be the first, to take a stand.  Our sweetest joy, is love, the purist love is honesty, and the mature love is the ability to recognize your vulnerabilities and shortcomings.  You will never find yourself, until you face your truth.

Flashback Who's That

Craig David is an English singer-songwriter who rose to fame in 1999 featuring on the single "Re-Rewind" by Artful Dodger.  David's debut album, Born to Do It.  The single "Fill Me In", released in the UK made him the youngest solo male artist ever to reach number one in the United Kingdom (he was 18 years old at the time).  In May 2001 saw the release of his first United States single  "Fill Me In" It reached number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100.   Born to Do It was released in America on 17 July 2001, peaking at number 11 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 1 million copies.  The single "7 Days" hit the Top 10 in the U.S.; although "Walking Away", which had reached number 3 in the UK and number 5 in Australia, missed the Top 40 in the U.S. and was the last of his singles to chart there.  His Born to Do It, sold more than 8 million copies worldwide, earning multi-platinum status in more than 20 countries.

His star was on the rise, with all the makings of a global superstar, but with constant label shifts.  David's paths and direction became very hazy.  The followup CD releases didnt capture the hearts of his debut.

These days David has embarked on a world tour starting with three shows across Australia, followed by four in Europe (France, Belgium, Germany and The Netherlands) and finally finishing in May with four shows in England (Birmingham, Manchester, Southampton and London). During the UK leg of the tour David debuted a new song entitled "Less Is More" and confirmed that his new album, Following My Intuition, is planned to be released later this year.
