Black Music Month

Spotlight - BLACK MUSIC MONTH showcasing singer Marlena Shaw's 'Sweet Beginnings' released in 1977. Shaw is not only known for her great singing ability, she also known for her great storytelling ability, just listen to her interpretation of Nancy Wilson's 'Go Away Little Boy'.

Marlena Shaw was Marlina Burgess, September 22, 1942, New Rochelle, New York, United States. Shaw began her singing career in the 1960s and is still singing today. Her music has often been sampled in hip hop music, and used in television commercials.

Shaw still performs and records today. In 2001 and 2007 Shaw was one of the performers at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands.

I was introduced to her music, but my two biggest music enthusiasts my Uncle Alvin and my Mother. I never resisted on what was playing, because it was always an education, which always covered all genres of music.

In my opinion Ms. Shaw can hold her own with the best of them, why major success has eluded her remains a mystery.
