Organic/TGIF

Happy Friday everyone, ... Let's Talk about It!!

I look to the Hills, taking it all in and I bask in the glory of all that has been afforded to me.  As I walk in gratitude, I am grateful and I'm humbled.  Still on my quest, I know that more is required to get to all that is glorious and righteous.  Faith is tested daily, its the valleys that truly prove beneficial in achievement of the peaks.  Stumbling blocks will arise, but they are not a dead end roadblock, its a wake up call!  I've grown accustomed to the true friends in my life who allow me, to be me, through my faults, heartaches and triumphs.  For me fair weather friends are old habits broken.  Pay attention the truth always rises.

This time of year, I tend to miss my mother the most, and no matter how old I get, I still yearn for her hugs and kisses, to see the beauty of her smile whenever she would greet me, the simple pleasures that we often take for granted.  Alone in my solitude I have my private conversations with GOD, trying to be what he wants me to be, in his time, not mine.  Some days I master that understanding, better than other days.  This week everything but the kitchen sink was thrust at me, and STILL I rose above it all, Doctors tried saying one thing, God said another.  Its gratifying when prayer is joyful, instead of panicked, which speaks to lack of Faith.  You must be genuine, organic and not hypocritical when honoring our King.  Faith must be a mainstay in our lives or it all falls apart!

Flashback Who's That Thursday

Zhane' members Jean Baylor, Renée Neufville were a refreshing duo in the 'Neo' Soul movement.  It was 1994 when their 'Hey Mr. DJ' (which peaked at #6 on the Hot 100) blasted through the airwaves, it was such an infectious groove.  Jean and Renee' met at Temple University, and use to sing at Talent shows, which caught the attention of Philly resident 'DJ Jazzy Jeff' and their first professional recording together was "Ring My Bell" on the same album that featured DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince’s “Summertime”.   Former Warner Bros. executive Benny Medina suggested they become a group.  For the name, Neufville had the idea of using the French pronunciation of their first names Jean and Renée, which sounded like “Jahnay” she played around with the spelling and added a 'Z' for a little flavor and came up with Zhané."   Unfortunately the duo only released two CD's on Motown, before parting ways leaving our appetite hungry for more, which wasn't to be.

Happy (70) Birthday ....

Gladys Knight was my first musical love and the love affair has never ended.   Knight possesses one of the strongest instruments in the business.  She clearly ranks amongst the 'creme dela creme' like Barbara, Aretha, Patti ... truly in great company.

Reevaluation/TGIF

Happy Friday everybody, ... Let's Talk about It!!

Some things that I use to do, I no longer do.  People will come and go, the stable friendships go the distance.  No longer in life should you be afraid to stand firm by a decision and in your convictions .  Not all things are meant to last, we must learn from every situation, and the most painful, will be the most groundbreaking.  Its essential to form a strong unit around yourself, those who can be honest with you, no matter what.  Though we would love to think every day will be perfect, and that flaws dont exist, please do not fool yourself.  Make sure that your house is in order, and that you're chopping away at your bucket list.  Reevaluation is a must, times change, people change and situations change.  If you're not doing your own inventory, someone else of no authority is surely doing it for you.  Clever is a nice attribute to possess, but graciousness is even better.  In your approach, let you motives be of a well intended nature.

This life goes by very fast, the older you get, the closer the other side is, often you find yourself pondering over where did the time go.   We continue to collect our thoughts, and still make promises to ourselves, that aren't always realistic, yet we must have a goal to strive for, something to push us, to create, and co-exist in a world that never promised to be fair, but we stay steadfast, to fight for equality everyday.  The good book teaches that the race is not won by the swiftest, but by those who endure to the end.  Make sure that your moments are enduring and that you find a stable state of mind.   Live your truth with grace and gratitude.  If you find yourself ending chapters, its not that you no longer love, or remember, you have just elevated yourself to a higher consciousness, of what works for you and what does not.

Flashback Who's That ...

Before Nicki Minaj..... there was Foxy Brown and Lil Kim who were trailblazer in the rap game, both were two successful crossover female rappers, who were holding their own in a largely male dominated genre.  It's been 20 years since Case's 'Touch Teach Me' , Toni Braxton's 'You Makin High' and Jay Z's 'Aint No N*gga' so from the jump, you knew that Inga DeCarlo Fung Marchand aka Foxy Brown, was something far different from the average female rapper, she could 'spit' with the fellas and hold her own. PLUS she was a 'banger' (gorgeous).  She caught the eye of many labels, which lead to a bidding war, Def Jam was the victor.  She released her debut CD entitled the 'Ill Na Na' in 1996, which sold over three million copies.  On the heels of her success, she joined rappers Nas, AZ and Nature to form the supergroup 'The Firm' on Dr Dre's' Aftermath label, then came her next solo masterpiece 'Chyna Dollin 1999, and Broken Silence in 2001.  Her star was constantly rising, which led to more collaborations.  I think her rival with 'Lil Kim' though friends in the beginning, both wanted to be the 'Griselda Blanco' of the rap world.   After 2002, she continued recording verses for herself and other artists but did not release any albums; she left the Def Jam label in 2003, thus canceling the release of her Ill Na Na 2 album.  Mixed in with her personal demons, which landed her in jail for assault and nearly going deaf.  She returned to Def Jam in January 2005 after then-Def Jam president and CEO Jay-Z signed her back to begin work on her new album Black Roses. In December 2005.   A fourth studio album, which originally was a mixtape, was released in May 2008.   It's now 2014 and we're 'still' waiting for the return of Ms' 'Ill Na Na' and the bigger question is ... does she still have game?  I say yes! Come back to us Foxy Brown, when you were on the scene, you kept things interesting.

MJ's ' Xscape' debuts at #1

The King of Pop - Michael Jackson's 'Xscape' Opus becomes his Seventh #1 album, just edging out The Black Keys for the #1 coveted position. It was the closest race for the #1 position in recent years, Jackson's 'Xscape' sold 161,909 units, about 500 more copies than the Black Keys 'Turn Blue' project. L.A, Reid curated this masterpiece, though not the opening numbers of his other posthumous CD 'Michael' back in 2011, which sold a healthy 200,000 plus copies in its debut week. For us fans its a bittersweet moment, while yes we're happy for the new music, but we would be MUCH happier if Michael were still here, producing his brilliant Epics. His record label and Estate are the ones who are benefitting the most, thats the travesty of this release. Personally with that being said, I think 'Xscape' is a very solid project through and through, its a lovely throwback to the '80's when he ruled the charts and could do no wrong. #foreverlovingMJ

Defining/TGIF

Happy Friday everyone, ... Let's Talk about It!!!

Isolated moments in time become periods of awareness, its the defining moments of your Destiny,Trials and your Testimony, through setbacks and conquests.  We set a mark on the person that we are to become, standards that are put forth.  How one defines their walk and mission is about values, and setting a standard. Mutual respect meets on an even playing field, when you see similar beliefs being mirrored.  Its not about agreeing with each other, its more about recognizing principles from values that are in place.  I can learn from you and you can learn from me, to open your mind to a thought process that is not generally of your own, its where you can be introduced, educated and enlighten.  Its all about either reaching  or teaching.  That format will never go out the window.

In the beginning GOD created the Heavens and the Earth, the richness of the land was duely meant for us.  We are all his children, created beautifully human, born to leave our mark, to learn from mistakes and to master this walk through with purpose, that drive of life.  No easy turns, and quickly taking shortcuts will only create a downward cycle of repetition, by spinning one's heels, leaves the wrong impressions in the sand.  We're here to be labors of love, for our fellow man and the generations to come, long after we have transitioned to the 'next' phase of our mission.  Its all realized, its all meant, and it is already written, we define our walk, either a long journey or one with cut glass, rocks and pebbles.  The choice is yours.

Powerhouses ...

About Last Night ...

One of the most underrated comedies that I've ever seen. Kevin Hart's 'About Last Night' was pure genius, it made you forget about the original and was stylishly and cleverly done, and mad funny. If it were a Caucasian cast it would have easily grossed over 100 million dollars. The 'suits' at the studios, for some reason don't believe that African Americans can do romantic comedies .... NOT!! If you missed it at the Theatre's, 'About Last Night' will be released on DVD May 20th definitely worth your money.

A modern day MASTERPIECE ...

My MIC sounds nice!!

Q-Tip .... Kamaal Ibn John Fareed (born Jonathan Davis on April 10, 1970), better known by his stage name Q-Tip, is an American rapper and record producer from St. Albans, Queens, New York, part of the critically acclaimed group A Tribe Called Quest. John Bush of AllMusic called him "the best rapper/producer in hip-hop history, while editors of About.com placed him on their list of the Top 50 Hip-Hop Producers, as well as placing him on their list of the Top 50 MCs of Our Time (1987–2007). In 2012, The Source ranked him #20 on their list of the Top 50 Lyricists of All Time. Currently in the studio working on his fourth CD 'The Last Zulu'. Q-Tip always a socially conscious brother, Im looking forward to his next OPUS!

As an Assembly member Waters advocated for divestment from South Africa's apartheid regime. In Congress she was an outspoken opponent of the Iraq War. Waters was charged, and exonerated, by the House's subcommittee on ethics with violations of the House's ethics rules in 2010.  In a Government strongly run by males, Ms Waters stands firm and tall, make her one of my personal Heroines.

Regret/TGIF

Happy Friday everyone, ... Let's Talk about It!!

I've made some mistakes in life, regrets and revisitation is always allowed.  Ownership is a very worthy attribute.  The ability to be a good listener is where the education begins.  We all have our own opinions ideas, and design.  No two people are the same.  In friendship the bond is there because of similarity and interests.  Disagreements happen in unions, it can be the deal breaker in a marriage dissolval.   Review the situation, fully understand your role and the part that you added to the fire.   Personal relationships can be long, and in truth some people are put into your path, to be temporary stumbling blocks, to help build your character, some are there for the long haul.  Through it all love and respect has to be in place and it has to be mutual adoration.

Apologizing for the same wrong over and over again, is redundant and little remorse is illustrated, your actions shine through.  The first time forgiveness can be allowed, but if a negative behavior continues, you bring more guilt to the situation, by accepting the dysfunction.  We long for melancholy moments of a perfect world, in a time when the work was much easier, and life was on an easy breezy path.  Those days were a 'charmed life'.  The longer that we allowed with the gift called life, the more situational it gets.  Theory teaches that we live to tell of the journey, and the wisdom is meant to be shared.  Realizing that perfection is a flawed fantasy.  Mistakes are not to keep us stagnated, regret comes if you do not realize that no one is right in every exchange, and finding yourself on the wrong side of right, speaks to your ability to be human.  A simple apology can go a long way, it starts with humility.

Flashback Who's That???

Flashback Who's That Thursday:

'For Real' are four powerhouse females who came on the scene very reminscent of the scape lls jazz/gospel group 'Take 6.   The ladies all equally beautiful, all very 'natural' and 'earthy' looking.  The got discovered at the LAX airport, when they decided to surprise their manager with an scape lls version of 'Happy Birthday' lucky for them an A&M record executive overheard them singing, and signed the quartet to recording contract.  The band released their debut album, It's a Natural Thang, with production from Brian McKnight on A&M Records in 1994, and it became a critical success, including a rare four stars from Rolling Stone magazine.  Their first single, "You Don't Wanna Miss" hit #28 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart; the group's second single, "Easy to Love", peaked at #65 on the same chart. The third single, "You Don't Know Nothin'", peaked at #88 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song also peaked at #54 in the UK Singles Chart in July 1995.  The album sold over one million copies worldwide, and peaked at #80 on the Billboard 200.

The group recorded 'Love Will Be Waiting At Home' for the 'Waiting To Exhale' CD and toured as background singers for Stevie Wonder's 'Natural Wonder' tour.  After being dropped from A&M records, they signed with Producer Dallas Austin's Arista imprint Rowdy Records in 1996, For Real released their second album Free. The first two singles were "Like I Do" and "The Saddest Song I Ever Heard" neither songs caught on at radio, the group parted ways.  They had all the elements to be successful in this music industry, unfortunately it wasn't to be.

Monica Lewinsky ....

Monica Lewinsky please pull your panties Up.  Enough already, first you say that you want to move on with your life, but you continue to talk about your 'alleged' affair with then President Clinton.   That happened in 1995.  Since then you have done a few question things, like posing 'nude', and granting an occasional interview rehashing the past.  Your latest interview with Vanity Fair clearly shows that you are an attention whore, very similiar to the Kadashians.  In truth only you and Bill Clinton truly know what went on behind closed doors.  Why continue to ride a story that is nearly 20 years old. Its time to move on and close this chapter if your life.

Hmmmmm .... Innocence lost!

Underrated: Phyllis Hyman

It was June 30th 1995, the day the music stopped for jazz and r&b singer Phyllis Hyman. The statuesque beauty oftened battled depression, over feeling underrated in they music Industry, and often wondered why someone of her talent magnitude, was not getting the breaks, that she so richly deserved, her demons came out to haunt her.   Her suicide note read like this '"I'm tired. I'm tired. Those of you that I love know who you are. May God bless you."

The politics of the music industry, can drive you to drastic measures.   Her big break came from Jazz artist/Producer Norman Connors, on a Stylistics remake of 'Betcha By Golly Wow' which lead to her signing to the Buddah records label, which later was purchased by Arista records.  At first Arista records had big dreams for Phyllis wonderfully gifted instrument, her debut album for the label was 'Somewhere In My Lifetime' which was produced by Pop singer Barry Manilow, 'Lifetime' received a lot of buzz and praise, but didnt move numbers, the way label honcho Clive Davis wanted, things went soar rather quick, the two had differences from the start, Phyllis visioned her career, one way and Clive visualized it another.  In 1980 she was paired with 'then' huge r&b producers James Mtume and Reggie Lucas' who produced her 'Under Your Spell' opus featuring the enormous hit single 'You Know How To Love Me'.  Things started to come together for Hyman, she was Queen of the commercial jingles, and having a hit record, people started taking notice.  She got cast in the Broadway play 'Sophisticated Ladies' the life story of jazz legend Duke Ellington.  She received a Tony award nomination for her role, in between Broadway and touring it was time to record the followup to her 'breakthrough' album 'Under Your Spell ' which she reluctantly recorded called 'Can't We Fall In Love' it was well received, giving her the first top ten song of her career.  It didnt crossover, but that didnt seem to matter much to her, because she was having the time of her life on Broadway with Duke Ellington's play, her 'STAR' was shining brightly. That didnt set well with label honcho Davis.  The pair's relationship grew more hostile.  He wanted her to focus on the music, he had two songs that he was holding for her called 'Too Tough' and 'Tonight I Gave In' but Phyllis was being a Prima Donna and found any excuse to not deal with her label president, so he gave those songs to Angela Bofill who was on the same label.  The songs were huge hits for Bofill, needless to say it really pissed off Hyman.  She finally went into the studio to record her 'Goddess Of Love' album, the album and single 'Riding The Tiger' flopped and she and Arista parted ways.  In 1985 she signed with Kenny Gamble and Kein Huff's Philadelphia International records where she released her 'gold' selling album 'Living All Alone' album, which was the highlight of her career.  Still Hyman wanted more and believed that she deserved more, so her demons of not feeling worthy enough continued to grow.  Due to the financial constraints that Philadelphia International records was going through at the time, it took six years for Phyllis to find another label home to release 'Prime Of My Life' though It was well received, containing two top ten r&b hits records, but no crossover success.  Hymans demons and depression grew more and more apparent, she became difficult to deal with, hostile and unruly.  The talent that she possessed, she was worthy, she was good enough, but it never seemed to be enough to give her the accolades that was deservant of her mega watt talent.  So when the news came June 30th 1995, of her suicide, hearts were broken, but few who knew her seemed surprised.

Essence has a Prince

The legendary artist known as Prince is gracing the cover of the June 2014 issue of Essence,

Under a new agreement with his old label Warner Bros., Prince dished on whether he will work with his band The Revolution again and dealing with record label execs that who would rather take long vacations over working.

On working with The Revolution:

“I’m not putting down The Revolution, even though people would love to see us together again. I owe a great debt to them. But I’m doing something else...”

On record execs:

"Every time I talk to the heads of large companies, they're always at the beach," said Prince. "Middle of the afternoon. What are you doing? 'Oh, I'm at the beach with my kids.' So we're working to send their kids to college. And to the beach. We're not supposed to accept that."

Prince also released a statement recently, revealing he’s working on a new studio album saying,

"A brand new studio album is on the way and both Warner Bros. Records and Eye are quite pleased with the results of the negotiations and look forward to a fruitful working relationship," Prince said in a statement.

Happy (25) Birthday Breezy

Happy (25) Birthday Breezy!!! Such a hard way to celebrate your born day on lockdown in Jail.  A hard head, equals hard knocks, from living a hard life.  Here's wishing and hoping that you can rehab and make the next 25 years a better life, from making better choices.
Let Go and Let God!!!

Rihanna doing it!!

Rihanna has reportedly jumped the Def Jam ship and officially signed to Jay Z's record label, Roc Nation.

Shawn "Jay Z" Carter, former Def Jam president, signed Rihanna back in 2005. Even after the Hip-Hop mogul left his role and started Roc Nation, the Barbadian princess remained at Def Jam and released seven albums under the label.

A lot has changed at Def Jam, since. Former CEO Barry Weiss stepped down earlier this year, which led to corporate parent Universal Music Group dissolving the company into three separate record labels: Def Jam, Island, and Motown. The latter has ultimately resulted in Rihanna leaving to join Roc Nation, whose team has been managing her since October 2010.

Riri's updated profile onRocNation.com indicates she's not only being managed by them, but fully housed. Though her publicist have yet to speak out, sources close to the singer confirmed that Rihanna is now a Roc Nation artist, signed to both the label and its management company.

It's safe to say the Unapologetic songstress is a major asset as the label's new biggest star. Why the news is being kept under wraps? We have no idea. The only thing left to do is wait for Rihanna's inaugural Roc nation release.

Gifting/TGIF

  • Happy Friday everyone. ... Let's Talk about It!!

We progress from struggle, the beautiful days and beautiful nights, are what life treats us with 'Sunny Skies', and on occasion some rain must fall.  We weather the storms, as truth is always in the silver lining.  God blesses each and everyone of us, no favor is shown greater to one and not the other, we are the recipients to his throne, beauty, mercy and his grace.  Actuality reveals what we are gifted with the inner strength that we possess.  Its often confusing to see, because we tend to question, more that we accept freely.  Its about believing what you are deserving of.  The burden and the toll will be of no more than we can bare.  Heaven is a lifetime away, yet we see remnants of it daily, its in the landscaping.

Let's break bread, fellowship and share in the exchange, of privilege and the chosen life that we are afforded.  No mistakes, everything is purposeful, even when its not visibly apparent.  Loving your fellow man, thats the rightful passage, we must be dedicated to what has already been written for us, long before our arrival.  You were chosen, the selected one, it was not by mistake.  Your contribution has its rewards, but it is never about what you will gain, its about what you take away from the experience, to share what you have learned.  Thats living in the moment of the journey, its life at its finest, its how you live it, its not perception, its in the gifting and presentation that you leave with others.  Remember that our creator is always watching, so let your words reflect from a genuine place and tone.
