Eddie Murphy’s career has spanned decades, last night some of the people he’s inspired will honor him as he receives the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center.
During the ceremony, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Arsenio Hall, Trevor Noah, Jay Pharoah and other special guests will pay tribute to Murphy.
The Kennedy Center said that Murphy was “the most commercially successful African-American actor in the history of the motion picture business, and is one of the industry’s top-five box-office performers overall.”
Murphy’s comedic efforts have taken him from Saturday Night Live to voicing the popular donkey on Shrek. But most people will always remember him as the leather-suited comedian who took the stage and joked about his mother’s hamburgers.
“We look forward to paying tribute to Eddie Murphy’s important and lasting impact on American culture,” said Kennedy Center President Deborah F. Rutter in a press release. “Through his appearances on Saturday Night Live, groundbreaking stand-up comedy, and work as a movie star, Eddie Murphy has shown that like Mark Twain, he was years ahead of his time.”
