Flashback Who's That ...

Flashback Who's That Thursday:
"I HATES YOU SO MUCH RIGHT NOW" are probably more real lyrics for Ciara to her ex-fiancé' Future, but in truth thats how singer Kelis introduced herself to the world of music. Big curly hair, body and sass.  Kelis, is an American singer-songwriter and certified chef. She has won Brit AwardsQ Awards, and NME Awards, and was nominated for two Grammy nomination.  Perhaps ahead of her time, the brand that she was giving to world was soulful ROCKSTAR.

Kelis began recording her debut album, Kaleidoscope, in mid-1998 and was finished within a year. Produced by The Neptunes (Pharrell) it sold 11,000 copies in its first week of release, and ending up selling a quarter of a million copies.  The single, "Caught Out There", peaked at number nine on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.  The entire album took off in Europe, where Kelis's colorful style in both clothing and hair received considerable attention.  Kelis found mainstream success in the U.S. in 2003, with her Hot Dance Club Play number-one, Billboard Hot 100 top three single, "Milkshake"; this helped to propel her third album, Tasty, to sell over 400,000 copies in the U.S in only two months.  Although The Neptunes contributed a number of tracks to the album, Kelis began collaborating with other producers, such as Dallas Austin, André 3000, Rockwilder, and Raphael Saadiq, producing an altogether more eclectic, alternative sound.  Still chasing success, she released in 2006 her next project "Kelis Was Here'  containing the single 'Bossy", it sold 157,000 copies, her label Jive dropped her in 2007.  She met ex-husband rapper Nas in 2002, got engaged in 2004, married in 2005 , she filed for divorced in 2009, when she was 7 months pregnant, their divorce was finalized in 2010.  With six albums under her belt, Kelis never achieved the attention that her big hair of  colorful outfits did, sadly.
